Many cosmetics on the shelf today are tainted with heavy metals. Most of the time, the contamination begins with the ingredients that are being used to add colour. For example, coal tar dyes(p-phenylenediamine and colours listed as "CI" followed by five digits) P-phenylenediamine is used in some hair dyes; other colours are used in a variety of cosmetics.
"They have the potential to cause cancer and may be contaminated with heavy metals toxic to the brain. Only 20% of over 12550 products tested contained none of the "Dirty Dozen" chemicals." (http://www.davidsuzuki.org/publications/downloads/2010/DSF-report-Whats-inside-that-counts.pdf)
Safecosmetics.org found 61 percent of lipsticks contained lead, with levels ranging up to 0.65 parts per million. Lead-contaminated brands included L’Oreal, Cover Girl and even a $24 tube of Dior Addict. - (See more at: http://www.safecosmetics.org/get-the-facts/regulations/us-laws/lead-in-lipstick/#sthash.vB8I329W.dpuf).
Yikes! when you consider that the average lipstick wearer can consume up to 4 tubes in a lifetime it makes you feel a little sick. So what to do? Besides crawl under a rock and wait to hear that it too will give you cancer? Like everything, moderation is best. I only highlight my hair once a year to hide my grey. My hair won't win me any awards but at least I am not contributing to the toxic bio accumulation of heavy metals in my system, that could lead to Alzheimer's. This scares me more than looking older or out of style.
I also only use natural mica and oxides and ultramarine pigments for my colour cosmetic formulations and this is the only make up I wear. Absolutely NO COAL TAR DYES! I know my cosmetics are safe and free of heavy metals and if I accidentally eat some of my lipstick, I am not going to get sick. I also follow this natural beauty cleansing routine every evening, helping to limit my exposure to excessive chemicals by not using commercial products.

Do you love that creamy, silky smooth feel of your commercial moisturizer? Did you know that that texture is most likely made with petrochemicals? Corporate interest has created a world where petrochemicals are the norm. These compounds are cheaper and easier to produce. Nature can provide better alternatives but usually it is too expensive to mass produce and [...]
I just got back from another world, a tropical paradise with the most amazing colour plants. They inspired me to create some new tropical shades (coming next month!). Cuba may be politically controversial but the flora and fauna are not. I was amazed at the variety of colour and texture of Cuban plant life. As I wandered around taking pictures [...]
This is a very easy, one ingredient recipe, but I find it to be one of the most useful. I use it as an eye makeup remover, moisturizer, lip conditioner, and to minimize stretch marks and scars. My husband uses it to shave with, and has since not had any in grown hairs. All you need is a [...]
At first I found natural cosmetic formulating very challenging. Mostly because you have very little materials to work with and you must create a product that is as good or better at performing than the synthetic competition. I have been making natural cosmetics for years using very few, excellent performing ingredients such as kaolin clay, jojoba, and mica. I equate [...]

Considering one in eight of the 82,000 ingredients used in personal care products are industrial chemicals, including carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, and hormone disruptors. Many products include plasticizers (chemicals that keep concrete soft), degreasers (used to get grime off auto parts), and surfactants (they reduce surface tension in water, like in paint and inks). Imagine what that does to your skin, [...]
