Mineral make up is better for your skin because it is provides natural sun protection without synthetic chemicals, and skin healthy minerals and nutrients. It has great coverage and long lasting durability. It is excellent for sensitive skin because it is free of irritants. Usually good brands will contain healthy healing clay (Kaolin and Illite are examples) and non toxic fillers such as silk powder, corn starch, rice or arrowroot powder. Traditional make up will have talc or bismuth oxychloride along with a bunch of other nasty chemical preservatives, petrochemicals and coal tar dyes.
The difference between traditional make up and true mineral make up is what isn’t in them! All make up has MICA and minerals and OXIDES such and ZINC and TITANIUM OXIDE but mineral make-up usually doesn’t contain any water. Water is what provides a nice home for bacteria so a preservative is necessary to keep you from getting sick. Usually preservatives contain formaldehyde, parabens, and other nasty chemicals. Be aware of fake advertising! Many brands will say their products are all natural mineral make up, but the truth is in their ingredient list. Things like bismuth oxychloride, disodium EDTA, sodium laureth /lauryl sulfate, mineral oil, coal tar dyes (FD&C Dyes, Lake Dye) and dimethicone/vinyl dimethicone, triethanolamine, are just a few.
Mineral make up will last until you decide to remove it. It has great durability provided by the kaolin clay and titanium dioxide. (The original stuff used in sun BLOCK along with zinc oxide). It is water resistant too. I have slept in it and it still on in the morning provided that I haven’t slept on my face! As for expiration dates, powder pigments such as foundations and blush or eye shadows will last a long time. There is no water for bacteria to take hold. Keep your brushes clean and your hands washed when handling any cosmetics and your make up will last and last!
It can easily be washed away with a good hydrating bar of soap. Organic coconut oil easily removes mascara and eye makeup, and as a bonus, it will also moisturize and condition your lashes!
The easiest way is to look for the shortest ingredient list with the least amount of chemically sounding names. READ THE LABEL! Online is a great resource for finding out what is in certain brands. Research! Research! Research! The more information you have, the better! There are very few brands that you can buy from the drug store that are actually truly safe. So really read that label a few times and be informed.
Mineral Make up is ideal for sensitive skin. Many people find that their skin actually benefits from the soothing effects of kaolin clay and non nano titanium dioxide. Other ingredients like silk powder, feed skin loving peptides and amino acids, for a glowing complexion.
