There are SO many benefits of using coconut oil on your skin! It isn’t jammed full of water or petroleum by products like many commercial cleansers and lotions. Coconut oil contains a unique combination of fatty acids with crazy, awesome medicinal properties! It can sooth bug bites, speed up healing, help with rashes, get rid of flaking skin, soften and shrink wrinkles, protect against sun damage, keep tans fresh longer, act as an antioxidant to prevent cellular aging, and so, so much more.
Coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides, which are metabolized differently and can have therapeutic effects. Studies on individuals with dry skin show that coconut oil can improve the moisture and lipid content of the skin (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15724344), and coconut oil can also be very protective against hair damage and one study shows effectiveness as sunscreen, blocking about 20% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. So many different ways to us it! I use it to remove my eye makeup and to ‘oil cleanse’ my entire face, and I use to have oily skin! ( when I was using synthetic foaming cleansers). It breaks down stubborn mascara and dark mineral pigments. It works great removing excess grit and grime and left over mineral make up by dissolving it all up. It also moisturizes while it cleans. I also use it as a easy clear lip balm and mix with sugar or salt for an easy scrub.
